The Executive Director of the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA) was today received at the South Africa High Commission in Accra Ghana by Her Excellency Grace Jeanet Mason, High Commission of the Republic of South Africa in Ghana.
The aim of the visit by the FARA delegation was to provide an update on the ‘State of Preparedness’ of the African Agribusiness and Science week scheduled to take place in June 2023 in Durban South Africa.
The event will also feature the engagement of the global bodies – Global Forum for Agricultural Research, Young Professional in Agricultural Research for Development, etc
It will be recalled that South Africa successfully played host to a series of FARA-led-led continent-wide events in the past. The forthcoming series of agribusiness fair and science week will initiate a new dispensation of the innovation-to-impact theory of change as an annual event spanning over the next five years in South Africa.

L’atelier virtuel de lancement de la deuxième édition du KM4AgD (2022) s’est tenu le 10 juin 2022 dans le cadre du Défi et de la Conférence placés sous le thème « Renforcer l’écosystème des connaissances en Afrique en vue d’atteindre les objectifs du PDDAA et de la Déclaration de Malabo fixés pour 2025 ». M. Benjamin Abugri, Spécialiste en chef de la gestion des connaissances, de l’apprentissage et de la communication a animé l’atelier au nom du groupe de travail « Gestion des connaissances » des institutions anciennement en charge du Pilier 4 du PDDAA [i]. Les membres du groupe de travail « Gestion des connaissances » ont à tour de rôle présenté tous les vingt-cinq participants à l’édition 2022 du Défi, d’une durée de trois mois, choisis par voie de concours dans quinze pays d’Afrique, aux plus de 160 participants à l’atelier.

Dans son allocution de bienvenue, Dr Yemi Akinbamijo, Directeur exécutif du FARA a reconnu le Défi relatif au KM4AgD comme étant le projet phare pour le développement de la recherche agricole pour le développement (AR4D) en Afrique axé sur le savoir. Il a évoqué les réalisations des gestionnaires du savoir formés et certifiés lors de l’édition 2021 du Défi relatif au KM4AgD. Au nombre de ces réalisations figurent la Déclaration d’Accra sur le programme KM4AgD pour l’Afrique et la production de politiques nationales de gestion des connaissances et des stratégies structurelles pour plus de 20 systèmes nationaux de recherche et de vulgarisation agricoles. Il a rappelé que l’édition 2022 du Défi relatif au KM4AgD visait à améliorer la saisie, la diffusion et l’utilisation des connaissances dans l’agriculture africaine. Il a également indiqué que le FARA, l’AFAAS, l’ASARECA, le CCARDESA et le CORAF étaient déterminés à mettre en œuvre le Défi relatif au KM4AgD et invité les principaux partenaires et autres acteurs clés du système d’innovation agricole en Afrique à appuyer l’initiative. Il a ensuite remercié le One CGIAR pour s’être associé à l’initiative.
Dr Aggrey Agumya, Directeur de la recherche et de l’innovation au FARA a remercié les dirigeants des institutions du PDDAA-XP4 pour leur engagement sans faille et invité les Directeurs exécutifs à présenter leurs observations et leurs messages de bonne volonté.
Dr Enock Warinda, Directeur exécutif de l’ASARECA, qui est également Président du Conseil consultatif, a, dans ses remarques, souligné que « l’ASARECA reconnaissait qu’une amélioration de la gestion et de l’accès à des connaissances et informations à jour était essentielle à la prise de décisions en connaissance de cause. Il a encouragé tous les participants à tirer le meilleur parti du Défi. Selon Dr Emmanuel Njukwe, Directeur de la recherche et de l’innovation du CORAF, qui s’exprimait au nom du Directeur exécutif, le CORAF est prêt à promouvoir la gestion des connaissances non seulement dans l’espace CORAF mais également auprès des partenaires. Dr Cliff Dlamini, Directeur exécutif du CCARDESA, a quant à lui souligné que les organisations qui accordaient la priorité à la gestion des connaissances prospéraient davantage que celles qui ne le faisaient pas. Il a réitéré la conviction du CCARDESA que le Défi relatif au KM4AgD permettrait d’améliorer le processus d’application des connaissances.

Dr Silim Nahdy, Directeur exécutif de l’AFAAS a dans son allocution mentionné l’idée erronée selon laquelle une seule entité sera en mesure de gérer les informations et a rappelé l’importance des partenariats dans la gestion des connaissances. Par ailleurs, M. Victor Michael, Directeur de la communication et de la gestion des connaissances de l’Institut international de recherche sur le bétail, (ILRI) s’exprimant au nom du One CGIAR, a affirmé l’importance de la gestion des connaissances dans la diffusion d’informations implicites et explicites. Dr Sarah Cummings, Directrice du Knowledge for Development Partnership (K4DP), a réaffirmé que les partenariats étaient essentiels pour améliorer les résultats attendus de la gestion des connaissances. Elle a rappelé aux participants que ces partenariats ne seront pas établis au cours de la période de trois mois mais devront être intégrés et maintenus.
Dr Amin Belhamissi, spécialiste technique au FIDA, a au nom des bailleurs de fonds reconnu que l’Afrique disposait d’énormes quantités de connaissance et affirmé l’appui indéfectible du FIDA et de la Commission européenne à l’initiative KM4AgD par le biais du programme PDDAA-XP4 financé par la Commission européenne et géré par le FIDA. L’objectif général du programme PDDAA-XP4 est de permettre à la recherche et à l’innovation dans le domaine agricole, y compris aux services de vulgarisation de contribuer efficacement à la sécurité alimentaire et nutritionnelle, au développement économique et à l’atténuation des changements climatiques en Afrique. Le défi annuel a pour objectif de renforcer les capacités appropriées, de créer des communautés de pratique pour la gestion des connaissances et de renforcer l’écosystème de connaissances en vue d’accélérer la réalisation des objectifs de la Déclaration de Malabo sur le PDDAA d’ici 2025 et les ODD d’ici 2030.
Le Défi est mis en œuvre à travers une approche intégrée, stratégique, éducative et transformationnelle. En 2021, lors de la toute première édition, trente (30) participants de 20 pays, qui avaient satisfait à toutes les exigences rattachées aux trois mois du défi, ont été certifiés en tant que « gestionnaires du savoir pour le développement durable » par les partenaires du PDDAA-XP4, le K4DP, les universités partenaires (Université de Makerere et Université internationale de Namibie) et le GFAR (FAO). En outre, vingt (20) politiques nationales de gestion des connaissances, vingt-six (26) stratégies organisationnelles de gestion des connaissances et dix (10) fiches d’information thématiques ont été élaborées et intégrées au niveau national.

The Virtual Kick-off workshop of the second edition of the KM4AgD 2022, took place on the 10th of June 2022 in lieu of the Challenge and Conference themed; Strengthening the African Knowledge Ecosystem for achieving & Sustaining the CAADP Malabo targets 2025. Mr Benjamin Abugri, the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa’s Knowledge Management Learning & Communications Cluster Lead Specialist moderated the workshop on behalf of the [i]CAADP-X Pillar 4 Institutions Knowledge Management (KM) Working Group. The KM working group members took turns to introduce all twenty-five participants for the 2022 three-month challenge, who have been competitively selected from fifteen countries across Africa to all the over 160 participants who joined the workshop.
The other members of the KM Working Group are Mr Andri Raso of AFAAS, Ms Bridget Kakuwa of CCARDESA, Mr Ben Moses Illakut of ASARECA, and Mr. Amadou Ngaido of CORAF Mr. Michael Victor represented the One CGIAR to introduce the seven participants from the CG Centres.

In his welcome remarks, the Executive Director of FARA, Dr. Yemi Akinbamijo, acknowledged the KM4AgD Challenge as the lighthouse project for a knowledge-based development in Agricultural Research for Development (AR4D) in Africa. He touched on the achievements of the previously trained and certified Knowledge Managers from the 2021 KM4AgD Challenge, one of which being the Accra Declaration on the KM4AgD agenda for Africa and the production of National Knowledge Management Policies and organizational strategies for over 20 National Agricultural Research and Extension Systems. He mentioned that the KM4AgD 2022 Challenge aims to improve the capture, dissemination and use of knowledge in African agriculture and expressed that “FARA, AFAAS, ASARECA, CCARDESA and CORAF are committed to deploying the KM4AgD Challenge and invite key partners and other key stakeholders within Africa’s Agricultural Innovation System to join in sustaining this initiative.
” He expressed his appreciation to the One CGIAR for joining hands already in this journey. Dr, Aggrey Agumya, the Director for Research and Innovations at FARA expressed appreciation to the leaders of the CAADP-XP4 institutions for showing strong commitment and invited the Executive Directors to give their remarks and goodwill messages. The Executive Director of ASARECA, Dr. Enock Warinda, who is also chair of the Advisory Council, in his remarks, underscored that “ASARECA recognizes that improved management and access to up-to-date knowledge and information is central to making informed decisions and in taking action” and encouraged all participants to get the best out of the challenge. The Director for Research and Innovation in CORAF, Dr. Emmanuel Njukwe speaking on behalf of the Executive Director, affirmed that CORAF is prepared to promote knowledge management not only in the CORAF region of work but across the partnership. On his part, Dr. Cliff Dlamini, Executive Director of CCARDESA, highlighted that organizations that prioritize knowledge management thrive more than those that do not. He re-echoed CCARDESA’s strong belief that the KM4AgD challenge would improve knowledge translation processes.

In his incisive remarks, the Executive Director of AFAAS, Dr. Silim Nahdy, mentioned the fallacy of a single entity’s ability to manage information and emphasized the relevance of partnerships in the management of knowledge. On his part, Mr. Victor Michael, Head of Communications and Knowledge Management at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and speaking on behalf of the One CGIAR, affirmed the relevance of knowledge management in the dissemination of implicit and explicit information. Dr. Sarah Cumming, a Director at the Knowledge for Development Partnership (K4DP), reiterated the importance of partnerships in delivering improved knowledge management outputs. She reminded participants that these partnerships are not achieved within the three-month period but must be mainstreamed and sustained.
On behalf of the donors, Dr. Amin Belhamissi, the Technical Specialist at IFAD, acknowledged how Africa possesses great amounts of knowledge, and affirmed IFAD and the European Commission’s unflinching support for the KM4AgD initiative through the CAADP-XP4 programme. The KM4AgD Challenge is a joint activity under the CAADP-XP4 programme with funding support from the European Commission (EC) administered by IFAD. The overall objective of the CAADP-XP4 programme is to enable agricultural research and innovation, including extension services, to contribute effectively to food and nutrition security, economic development, and climate mitigation in Africa. Specifically, the annual challenge seeks to build appropriate capacities, establish communities of practice for Knowledge Management and strengthen the knowledge ecosystem to accelerate the achievement of the CAADP Malabo goals by 2025 and the SDGs by 2030.
It is implemented through an integrated, strategic, educational, and transformational approach. During the maiden edition in 2021, thirty (30) participants from 20 countries who successfully completed all requirements of the 3-month challenge were awarded as “Knowledge Managers for Sustainable Development” jointly by the CAADP-XP4 Partners, K4DP and Partner Universities (Makerere University & International University of Namibia), and GFAR (FAO). Again, twenty (20) National Knowledge Management Policies, twenty-six (26) organizational Knowledge Management Strategies, and ten (10) thematic Knowledge briefs were developed and are currently being mainstreamed at the country level.

The 2022 Challenge which is the second edition, starts on June 11 and spread over to September 9. Findings from the Challenge will be shared through a Continental KM4AgD Conference to be held in Accra, Ghana during the week of September 12 to 16, 2022. Look out to the call for registration.

Le Forum africain des services de conseil agricole (AFAAS), l’Association pour le renforcement de la recherche agricole en Afrique de l’Est et du Centre (ASARECA) et le Centre de coordination de la recherche et du développement agricoles de l’Afrique australe (CCARDESA) ont signé un protocole d’accord tripartite (MoU) pour renforcer leur collaboration dans le but d’améliorer la recherche agricole pour le développement (AR4D) en Afrique orientale, centrale et australe.
Les Directeurs exécutifs des trois organisations : Dr Silim Nahdy (AFAAS), Dr Enock Warinda (ASARECA) et Dr Cliff Dlamini (CCARDESA) ont signé l’accord tripartite lors d’une réunion stratégique tenue le 3 juin 2022 à l’hôtel Hilton de Nairobi. Les trois organisations ont accepté de concevoir une stratégie de partenariat et un cadre de collaboration pour rendre opérationnel le Protocole d’accord dont la mise en œuvre sera coordonnée par le Dr Cliff Dlamini. La cérémonie de signature s’est déroulée en présence de M. Paul Fatch, Président du Conseil d’administration de l’AFAAS, et du Dr Geoffrey Mkamilo, Président du Conseil d’administration de l’ASARECA ainsi que des membres suivants du Conseil d’administration des trois organisations : Dr Jeff Mutimba (AFAAS), Pr Patience Mshenga (ASARECA), Dr Catherine Senkoro (CCARDESA) et M. Isaac Chiundira (CCARDESA).
Le protocole d’accord vise à mettre en place un cadre permettant d’établir un partenariat et une collaboration solides entre les trois organisations pour leur permettre de bien servir leurs clients tant individuellement que collectivement ainsi que de renforcer la synergie et d’harmoniser la programmation des initiatives en matière d’AR4D.
Les trois organisations ont décidé de mettre en œuvre des initiatives de coopération dans les domaines suivants :
Réaliser des études conjointes en vue d’améliorer les politiques et les pratiques et partager les résultats dans des forums pertinents ;
Élaborer des stratégies et des programmes conjoints pour la recherche agricole pour le développement et les services de vulgarisation pour accroître l’impact à l’échelle ;
Procéder à une planification, à une mise en œuvre, à une évaluation et à un suivi conjoints, partager les leçons apprises et répondre aux questions soulevées liées aux projets mis en œuvre conjointement par les Parties ;
Organiser des activités de sensibilisation pour induire les changements souhaités dans les politiques en matière d’AR4D ;
Mener des consultations institutionnelles en vue d’améliorer l’efficacité opérationnelle et économique ;
Partager les capacités, les informations techniques et générales en ayant recours aux mécanismes établis entre les Parties ; et
Organiser des ateliers de rédaction de propositions conjointes et de mobilisation de ressources.
Le Protocole d’accord restera en vigueur pour une période de dix ans et sera prolongé comme convenu entre les Parties. Des modifications y seront apportées, le cas échéant.
The African Forum for Agricultural Advisory Services (AFAAS), in conjunction with the Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in Eastern and Central Africa (ASARECA) and the Centre for Coordination of Agricultural Research and Development for Southern Africa (CCARDESA), have signed a Tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen their collaboration on improving Agricultural Research for Development (AR4D) in Eastern, Central and Southern Africa.
The Executive Directors of the three organizations: Dr Silim Nahdy (AFAAS), Dr Enock Warinda (ASARECA), and Dr Cliff Dlamini (CCARDESA), signed the Tripartite MoU during a strategic meeting held at Hilton Hotel, Nairobi, on 3rd June 2022. The three organizations agreed to develop a partnership strategy and collaborative framework to operationalize the MoU, whose implementation will be coordinated by Dr Cliff Dlamini. The signing ceremony was officiated and supported by the Chairpersons of the Boards of Directors: Mr Paul Fatch (AFAAS), Dr Geoffrey Mkamilo (ASARECA); and selected Board Members of the three organizations: Dr Jeff Mutimba (AFAAS), Prof. Patience Mshenga (ASARECA), Dr Catherine Senkoro (CCARDESA), and Mr Isaac Chiundira (CCARDESA).
The purpose of the MoU is to provide a framework for strong partnership and collaboration among the three organizations to enable them to serve their clients with distinction both individually and collectively and enhance synergy and harmonized programming of AR4D initiatives.
The three organizations agreed to implement cooperation initiatives in the following areas:
Commissioning of joint studies to inform policy and practice and sharing results in relevant fora;
Development of joint programmes and strategies for agricultural research for development and extension services to enhance impact at scale;
Undertaking joint planning, implementation, monitoring, evaluation, sharing of lessons learnt and responding to issues relating to projects that are being implemented jointly by the Parties;
Undertaking joint advocacy and influence for desired AR4D policy changes;
Conducting institutional consultations to improve operational and economic efficiency;
Sharing of capacities, technical information and general information using established mechanisms among the Parties; and
Convening joint proposal writing and resource mobilization.
The MoU will remain valid for ten years and will be extended further as agreed among the Parties. Amendments to the MoU will be made as and when necessary.
