The Continental Conference has been organized in collaboration with the Knowledge for Development Partnership (K4DP), Young Professionals for Agricultural Development (YPARD), and the Global Forum on Agricultural Research and Innovation (GFAR). The three-day conference will take place from December 7th to December 9th, 2021, in Accra, with physical attendance strictly limited to 40 guests from over 20 African countries. Dr. Yemi Akinbamijo, the Executive Director of FARA, will open the maiden Conference on December 7th, 2021, followed by a series of goodwill statements from partner organizations. Dr. Sarah Cummings, a leading voice of the global Knowledge Management Community (KM4Dev) and a Director at the K4DP, will deliver the keynote titled: A sixth generation of knowledge management for development? Implications for agriculture in Africa. It will be followed by a presentation on “Advancing the Science Agenda for Agriculture in Africa (S3A), CAADP Malabo targets, and the SDGs agenda in Africa through KM for improved production and productivity in Africa” by Dr Irene Annor-Frempong, Coordinator for the LEAP4FNSSA Project and former Director for Research and Innovation at FARA. The 28 participants in the 2021 KM4AgD Challenge will take turns to present their draft countries’ KM Concepts and Challenges for input and validation.
Presentations of concepts and challenges produced in the KM4AgD Challenge will continue on Day 2 (December 8th, 2021). The final day will be dedicated to validating the 10 KM briefs developed from the 10 identified Challenges, inaugurating the Africa Knowledge management Community of Practice for Artificial Intelligence; a presentation on the implications of fake news and misinformation by Prof Kimir Dalkir of McGill University (Canada) and the concept of Knowledge Art by Dr. Andreas Brandner, a founding director of the K4DP; a special awards ceremony to honour successful candidates in the 2021 Challenge with certificates and an International Knowledge Management Award Ceremony to honour the 2021 Global prestigious KM Excellence award recipients, and presentation of the conference communique.
This Conference is organized under the CAADP-XP4 Programme, funded by the European Union (EU) and administered by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). Le Partenariat de long terme entre l’Union européenne et l’Union africaine pour la sécurité alimentaire et nutritionnelle et une agriculture durable (LEAP4FNSSA) est un projet d’une durée de quatre ans (de novembre 2018 à octobre 2022) financé par le programme Horizon 2020 pour la recherche et l’innovation de l’Union européenne. Depuis sa création jusqu’en fin juillet 2021, le projet LEAP4FNSSA a été habilement coordonné par le Centre de coopération internationale en recherche agronomique pour le développement (CIRAD). En juillet 2021, l’assemblée générale du LEAP4FNSSA avait approuvé la nomination du Forum pour la recherche agricole en Afrique (FARA) comme coordonnateur pour la période restante du projet, c’est-à-dire jusqu’en octobre 2022. Le FARA tient à remercier sincèrement les membres de l’Assemblée générale du LEAP4FNSSA pour lui avoir confié la coordination du projet. Il s’agit d’une étape importante parce que le FARA est la première institution africaine à participer à la coordination d’un projet Horizon 2020 de l’Union européenne. Le partage du rôle de coordination par des institutions européennes et africaines illustre le caractère bicontinental du projet LEAP4FNSSA. Dans l’exercice de sa fonction de coordination, le FARA compte sur l’appui et l’engagement de tous les membres du consortium en vue d’atteindre l’objectif du projet.
Le FARA souhaite, au nom du consortium du LEAP4FNSSA, saisir cette occasion pour féliciter le CIRAD pour le rôle majeur qu’il a joué dans la promotion du projet depuis son lancement ainsi que dans la coordination de sa mise en œuvre jusqu’en 2021. Après avoir cédé le rôle de coordination, le CIRAD continue à jouer un rôle clé dans le projet.
Lorsqu’il a reçu mandat de coordonner le projet LEAP4FNNSA, le FARA a désigné Dr IreneAnnor-Frempong au poste de coordinateur du projet.
Dr Annor-Frempong possède de solides compétences techniques et a démontré ses qualités de leadership dans le domaine de la recherche agricole pour le développement. Dr Annor-Frempong, qui est d’origine ghanéenne, est titulaire d’un doctorat de l’école vétérinaire de Bristol (Université de Bristol) au Royaume-Uni, d’un master en sciences des productions animales de l’Université et centre de recherche de Wageningen aux Pays-Bas, d’une licence en sciences agronomiques (avec mention) et d’un diplôme d’enseignement de l’Université de Cape Coast au Ghana. Dr Annor-Frempong est actuellement Commissaire de la CoSAI (Commission du CGIAR sur l’intensification durable de l’agriculture). Elle est directrice sortante de la recherche et de l’innovation et ancienne directrice du renforcement des capacités du FARA. Elle a également été chef du département des sciences animales de l’Université de Cape Coast. De 2008 à 2020, elle était en charge de l’orientation stratégique de la recherche et de l’innovation et de la fonction d’appui au renforcement des capacités. En sa qualité de Directrice de la recherche et de l’innovation, elle avait conduit l’élaboration et la coordination de programmes à l’échelle du continent dont l’Agenda scientifique pour l’agriculture en Afrique, un cadre continental visant à améliorer l’application de la science en vue de la réalisation des objectifs de développement agricole de l’Afrique. L’Agenda scientifique a été ratifié en 2014 par les chefs d’État et de gouvernement. Dr Annor-Frempong a promu le « partenariat dans le domaine de la recherche et de l’innovation » entre l’Union africaine et l’Union européenne notamment en dirigeant la Plateforme pour un partenariat Afrique-Europe pour la recherche agricole pour le développement (PAEPARD) et en participant au projet LEAP4FNSSA, au dialogue politique de haut niveau entre l’Union européenne et l’Union africaine (HLPD) portant sur le groupe de travail FNSSA et au projet Développement et innovation intelligente grâce à la recherche dans le domaine de l’agriculture (DeSIRA) mis en œuvre par le FARA et les organisations sous-régionales de recherche agricole (ASARECA, CCARDESA et CORAF) et l’AFAAS.
Le FARA espère assurer une bonne coordination du projet LEAP4FNSSA caractérisée par un approfondissement du partenariat entre l’Afrique et l’Europe pour la recherche et l’innovation en vue d’améliorer les FNSSA.
The first batch of ARIFA fellows arrived at the Universidade Federal de Goiás.
The cohort, drawn from five different Nigerian institutions, is part of the TETFund-sponsored candidates under the FARA-TETFUND-UFV Pegadogogic retooling strategy, which began in November 2020. More than a hundred additional candidates are anticipated to join them in the following weeks.
This fellowship program is a partnership between FARA and Nigeria’s Tertiary Education Fund (TETFUND) to jointly implement the Agricultural Research and Innovation Fellowship for Africa (ARIFA) championed by Brazil. The program adds a unique and much-needed perspective to MSc programs and typically awards scholarships to students planning to major in disciplines directly related to agriculture, food security, and other fields of study.
It has the aim of supporting the innovation of young Africans in the field of agriculture through the provision of grants to aid studies and research at Ph.D., MSc levels as well as other short-term postgraduate certificate courses in selected countries outside of Africa. This is to bring up a crop of AR4D practitioners who are vested in contemporary techniques in agriculture and to strengthen the capacities of Nigerian academic lecturers and researchers.
All suitable candidates who have the passion to solve agricultural issues innovatively are encouraged to apply.
THE LONG-TERM EU-AU PARTNERSHIP FOR FOOD AND NUTRITION SECURITY FOR SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE
The Long-term AU-EU Partnership for Food and Nutrition Security for Sustainable Agriculture (LEAP4FNSSA) is a four-year (November 2018 to October 2022) project financed by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme. The objective of this project is to create an institutional arrangement for African and European institutions to engage in Sustainable Partnerships for research and innovation on Food and Nutrition Security, and Sustainable Agriculture (FNSSA). From its inception up to the end July 2021, the LEAP4FNSSA project was very ably coordinated by the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (Centre de coopération internationale en recherche agronomique pour le développement – CIRAD). In July 2021, the LEAP4FNSSA General Assembly endorsed the Forum for Agricultural Research (FARA) to serve as coordinator for the remainder of the project period, i.e. up to October 2022. FARA wishes to register her deep appreciation to members of the LEAP4FNSSA General Assembly for entrusting FARA with the responsibility of coordinating the project. This is an important milestone because FARA becomes the first African institution to share in the coordination of an EU Horizon 2020 project. The sharing of the coordination role by European and African institutions exemplifies the bi-continental character of the LEAP4FNSSA project. In performing her coordination role, FARA is counting on the support and commitment of all LEAP4FNSSA consortium partners to ensure achievement of the project’s purpose.
On behalf of the LEAP4FNSSA consortium FARA wishes to use this opportunity to applaud CIRAD for the outstanding leadership it exhibited in advancing the project through its inception and in coordinating its implementation up to July 2021. After handing over the coordination role, CIRAD continues to play key roles in the project.
Upon being mandated to coordinate the LEAP4FNNSA project, FARA appointed Dr. Irene Annor-Frempong to serve as the project’s Coordinator.
Dr. Annor-Frempong possesses very strong technical and leadership qualities in the agricultural research and development domain. A Ghanaian by birth, Dr. Annor-Frempong holds a PhD from the Veterinary School, University of Bristol, UK; MSc in Animal Production Science from Wageningen University and Research, the Netherlands; BSc. (Hons) Agriculture and a Diploma in Education from the University of Cape Coast, Ghana. Dr Annor-Frempong is currently, a Commissioner of the CGIAR Commission on Sustainable Agricultural Intensification (CoSAI). She was the immediate past Director of Research and Innovation and the former Director of Capacity Strengthening at FARA. She previously served as the Head of Department of Animal Science at the University of Cape Coast. At FARA, she led the strategic orientation of Research and Innovation and the Capacity Development Support Function from 2008 to 2020. In her role as the Director of Research and Innovation, she led the development and coordination of continent-wide programs including the Science Agenda for Agriculture in Africa—a continental framework for improving the application of science towards achievement of Africa agriculture development targets. The Science Agenda was ratified by African Heads of State and Government in 2014. She advanced the ‘Research and Innovation Partnership’ between the Africa Union and the European Union through, among others, the leadership of the Platform for Africa-Europe Partnership on Agricultural Research for Development (PAEPARD), and participation in the LEAP4FNSSA, the AU-EU High Level Policy Dialogue (HLPD) on FNSSA working Group and the EU’s Development-smart Innovation through Research in Agriculture (DeSIRA) project implemented by FARA and the sub regional agriculture research organisations (ASARECA, CCARDESA and CORAF) and AFAAS.
FARA looks forward to a successful coordination tenure of the LEAP4FNNSSA project, characterised by the deepening of the Africa-Europe partnership on research and innovation for improving FNSSA.

Notre Directeur exécutif, Dr Yemi Akinbamijo prononçant son discours lors de la Foire des technologies de l’Afrique de l’Ouest.
Je vous remercie d’avoir invité le FARA à cet événement historique qui peut-être pour la première fois réunit diverses parties prenantes pour échanger des idées, des connaissances et peut-être forger de nouveaux partenariats en vue d’intégrer les technologies pour le développement agricole.
Le Forum pour la recherche agricole en Afrique (FARA) et ses organisations affiliées (ASARECA, CORAF, CCARDESA et NASRO), sont le fer de lance de la création d’écosystèmes d’innovation pour relever les défis auxquels font face les utilisateurs finaux des technologies au sein des Systèmes d’innovation agricole (SIA).
Le FARA, en sa qualité d’institution chargée du compact catalyseur CDTO du TAAT, a au cours des dernières années mis l’accent sur (i) le renforcement des capacités des facilitateurs locaux à gérer les plateformes d’innovation, (ii) le soutien à l’élaboration du matériel de vulgarisation en vue de la mise à l’échelle des technologies, (iii) le développement de l’entrepreneuriat agricole et (iv) le renforcement des capacités des jeunes et des femmes à recueillir des informations et à échanger des expériences sur la mise en œuvre du TAAT.
Grâce à cette approche à quatre volets, le CDTO jette les bases d’une solide collaboration avec les compacts « produits » ce qui permet de concevoir, mettre au point et organiser le matériel de vulgarisation en vue d’appuyer la mise à l’échelle des technologies au niveau local.
Dans la foulée de la pandémie de Covid-19, les TIC ont permis d’atteindre un plus grand nombre de personnes. Le compact a également tiré parti d’autre programmes, dont le CAADP-XP4, pour apporter de nouvelles compétences et connaissances à la communauté du TAAT en utilisant des outils tels que la prospective, la gestion des informations et l’application de la conception pédagogique dans le cadre de l’élaboration de matériel dédié aux technologies à mettre à l’échelle.
Jusqu’ici, le CDTO a atteint plus de trois millions de bénéficiaires en assemblant 69 technologies, grâce à la publication de 43 vidéos, de neuf communiqués de presse, de 21 articles sur des pages Web portant sur le renforcement des capacités, le genre, la jeunesse, l’agrobusiness, la gestion des connaissances et la communication, la diffusion de 12 émissions radiodiffusées et de six émissions télévisées et la distribution de 701 prospectus et cahiers.
Les publications du CDTO ont été téléchargées 83 603 fois avec 427 354consultations (www.Library.faraafrica.org)
Enfin, et surtout, 463 plateformes d’innovation associées au TAAT et 747 facilitateurs ont été enregistrés sur le portail du FARA.
Bien que ces chiffres semblent élevés, nous reconnaissons qu’il reste encore beaucoup à faire pour s’assurer que les technologies appropriées atteignent les utilisateurs finaux et assurer la sécurité alimentaire et nutritionnelle en Afrique.
À cet égard, le FARA et les OSR sont résolus à faire fond sur les acquis du TAAT I et à continuer à mettre en œuvre de nouvelles activités permettant d’assurer la transformation agricole tant désirée entrant ou non dans le cadre du TAAT II.
